Raja Sankranti symbolises the beginning of agricultural year .It is celebrated for the last three days of the Oriya month of Jyestha ( May - June ) . These three days are considered to be the menstrual period of the mother earth . All the agricultural operations remain suspended during the festival .In this festival , girls dress and decorate themselves . Playing with swings and singing songs are attractions of the festival . It adds to the colour of the festival . The youngmen and boys also celebrate the festival with great enthusiasm . Different types of games.and competitions are organised to mark the occasion .A variety of cakes are made for the occasion . People exchange cakes among their relatives and friends .

It falls on the last day of the dark fortnight of Jyestha ( May - June ) the second month of Oriya year . This is observed with much sanctity by the married Hindu women . This is the occasion when the wife observes fast and prays with great devotion wishing a long life for her husband .According to mythology and Hindu belief Savitri was the beautiful daughter of the king Aswapati . Aswapati had given complete freedom to choose her husband at her will . After a long search , she came across a handsome youngman , Satyavan in the forest . He was cutting wood . Savitri came to know that the youngman was a prince in exile . He was living in the forest with his blind parents . Savitri decided to marry Satyavan .
